Local and cross border / long-distance truck drivers – code 14

Job Purpose:

Local and Cross border / long-distance transportation of specialized dangerous goods. The driver must deliver goods on schedule and must be willing to operate within or outside the borders of South Africa as and when needed.  Courteous and professional service to our customers is essential. 

Duties:

  • Liaise with Maintenance Staff to ensure vehicles are in a roadworthy condition prior to use.
  • Liaise with the respective Controller(s) daily regarding collection and delivery of customers’ products.
  • Adhere to health and safety regulations as per training received during induction and Hazchem training.
  • Understand and comply with road safety/dangerous goods regulations, road signs, speed limits and border customs control.
  • On-time pick-up and delivery of goods.
  • Report any undue delay or deviation.
  • Ensure speedy turnaround times and prompt border progress to meet customer deliveries on time.
  • Report accidents and incidents immediately to the SHERQ Africa manager and Investigator.
  • Responsibility for the load from loading until off-loading.
  • Responsibility to ensure that the load is covered and correctly secured at all times.
  • Drive responsibly and in a safe manner.
  • Render a professional service to customers and treat customers and their staff with respect.
  • Complete required documentation as prescribed during training.
  • Execute correct vehicle checks as per the requirements while driving.
  • Carry out daily vehicle checks and recognize and report any defects.
  • Adhere to all customer and company safety regulations.
  • Adhere to all legal requirements.
  • Maintain all safety equipment and ensure damaged equipment is replaced as soon as possible.
  • Responsibility for his/her own safety and health according to the OHS Act and ensuring that other staff members and visitors act responsibly while on the company’s and/or customers’ premises.
  • Ensure adherence to all Company Policies, e.g. Quality Policy, Drug & Alcohol Policy, etc.
  • Route planning and staying on route without deviating (no unauthorized route changes.)
  • Other tasks that are part of the job are:
    • The driver will be responsible for any fuel shortages and fuel consumption must be monitored.
    • Assist in loading and off-loading, securing and protecting loads as and where necessary.
    • Hitching and unhitching semi-trailers, trailers, links and tankers.
    • Shunting trailers as and when necessary.
    • Driver must be in possession of a cellphone and must ensure that he is contactable 24 hours per day.
  • Full compliance with truck and trailer file regulations and procedures.
  • Obtain border clearance as per standard procedure (not sending documents with other drivers in advance, documents must accompany the horse and trailer at all times.)
  • Execute correct vehicle checks while driving (as per standard requirements).
  • Perform other reasonable duties that may not generally form part of your duties.

 

Responsibilities:

  • It is the responsibility of the driver to ensure that all his/her driving documents, i.e. PRDP License permit, Hazchem, medical certificate, etc. are valid at all times.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
  • Comprehensive Logbook completion to be done daily. All problems reported to be signed off by the person whom the problem was reported to on the pre-check sheet.
  • No unauthorized passengers and/or cargo may be carried on a company vehicle at any given time.
  • Zero tolerance on camera tampering and / or being under the influence of alcohol and / or any intoxicating drugs.

Skills/Qualifications needed:

  • Valid PRDP License (DGP), Code 14, (EC, Goods / Dangerous Goods), driver’s license.
  • Valid Occupational Health Medical Certificate, Hazchem Certificate, Passport.
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years’ experience in transportation of dangerous goods into Africa.
  • Must be over the age of 26 years.
  • General mechanical knowledge will be advantageous.
  • Minimum Grade 10, preferable Grade 12 standard of education.
  • Must be able to obtain a blasting license in the relevant African Country
    • No criminal record
  • MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED
  • MUST BE A SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL
