Mechanic – skilled artisan for truck workshop

Job Purpose:

 Maintain the company’s fleet of vehicles according to manufacturers and legal requirements.  Complete job cards specifying the mechanical repairs performed and submit the necessary service documents to the administration office for accurate recordkeeping.  Obtain approval for the ordering of parts / spares needed to complete repairs / services.

Duties:

  • Diagnose and repair medium to heavy-duty trucks / trailers / tankers, including preventative maintenance, inspections, repair to air and hydraulic brakes, tyres, warranty procedures, driveline, steering and suspension, electrical, mobile AC and overhaul and engine rebuilds, with safety as the top priority.
  • Service and maintain a fleet of tractors / trailers / tankers (whichever is applicable) and provide maintenance on large trucks / trailers / tankers.
  • Plan time-based services and notify logistics in advance when vehicle is due for service.
  • When necessary, arrange via the office, for vehicle to be serviced by agent/manufacturer.
  • Preventative maintenance on the full fleet:
    • Maintenance inspections and services, repairs, failures and driver-related concerns (inclusive of general and major repairs).
    • Ensure the regular servicing of the Company’s vehicle fleet according to the manufacturers’ recommendations (inclusive of general and major services).
    • Perform diagnostics and repairs where needed.
    • Work on trucks / trailers / tankers of all sizes performing oil changes, filter changes, greasing the whole truck / trailer / tanker, lubrication, battery maintenance, brake replacement and adjustment and overhead doors repairs.
    • Replace wheel bearings, u joints, belts and hoses.
    • Service air conditioning, heating, engine-cooling, replacing of running lights and troubleshoot electrical systems.
    • Repair brake and air systems, fifth wheels, adjusted clutches, repair all lights, wiring harness, starting and charging systems and electrical systems.
    • Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices on trucks / trailers / tankers and adjust with hand tools where needed.
  • Submit request for orders on necessary spares / repairs of trucks / trailers / tankers / equipment.
  • Comply with procedures from stores on spares issued and ensure spares issued are used and/or returned to stores.
  • Detailed and accurate completion in writing of diagnosis, spares and repairs per job / repair / breakdown done on the official workshop job cards / repair order (to be signed off by QC Inspector).
  • Carries out a final check on vehicles prior to returning into service (signs job card.)
  • Request a gate pass from the Truck QC Inspector.
  • Ensure all outside work has official company order number issued and noted on gate pass.
  • Attend to vehicle breakdowns when and where needed.
  • Responsibility for own safety and health according to the OHS Act and ensuring that other staff members and visitors act responsibly while on the Company’s premises.
  • Ensure adherence of all company Policies, e.g. Quality policy, Drug & Alcohol policy, etc.
  • Perform other reasonable duties that may not normally form part of your duties as and when required.
  • Overtime and weekend work might be requested from time to time as per the implemented shifts.
  • Keep the workshop / work area clean and tidy.
  • Follow the signing in / out procedure on special tools and equipment.
  • Ensure tools are used correctly and safely.
  • Attend safety meetings.
  • Assist with collection / delivery of goods.
  • Assist the team on site with general tasks.
  • Adhere to all reasonable job instructions.
  • Zero tolerance on being under the influence of alcohol and / or any intoxicating drugs.
  • NO WORK NO PAY PRINCIPLE APPLIES AT ALL TIMES

Skills/Qualifications needed:

  • Minimum Grade 10 & 3 – 5 years’ experience in a mechanical workshop on heavy duty vehicles (eg. Volvo, MAN, Iveco).
  • Trade papers / red seal certification / equivalent.
  • Knowledge of Road Traffic Regulations & Code 10 license (code 14 advantage) and own / reliable public transportation.
  • Auto Electrical experience (advantage).
  • Supervisory experience (advantage).
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations and practices & First Aid Training (advantage).
  • MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED
  • MUST BE A SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL
